raindrops on roses & whiskers on kittens

Now that’s it’s “summer” we have been sleeping with the bedroom windows open, but the thunder and lightning were so INSANE last night, I had to channel my inner Von Trapp and sing “My Favorite Things” to calm myself down…it was scary!

It woke me up it was so loud.  And just so you know, normally I sleep like a rock, so this was no joke.

Clearly I had a rough night’s sleep – enter coffee :)

These are a few of my favorite things…

IMG_2736 IMG_2777

Peach chobz (not as good as blueberry) and a bowl of melon.

IMG_2711

I had a mid-morning snack of peanut butter + banana, just to tide me over until lunch.

Once I was full and fueled, I began my Hawaii preparations (planning meals for Kyle while I’m gone, downloading new music and yoga sessions on my iTunes, etc.) – sure it may be a bit premature (I leave on Sunday), but I know I have lots in the coming week, so the type A in me wanted to get things rolling.

That really worked up my appetite!  Lunch time!

IMG_2882

I made a sammich with Za’atar tofu (baked with Sabrina’s spice mix last week) on one side, and roasted red pepper hummus on the other.  I already need another tub!

IMG_2883

Fan-freakin-tastic.  Random question: Do you guys cut your sandwiches in half before eating them?  Or do you bite right in?  If you cut them in half, which half do you eat first?  I always cut mine diagonally, and eat the smaller half first.  That way I don’t get sad when I finish the first half because I still have the bigger part left :)  Haha, I’m a freak, I know.

Anyways, I feel like soy products have been getting a bad rap lately, so I just wanna say – errrthang in moderation kiddos!!  Tofu isn’t the devil, especially if you prepare it yourself.

IMG_2884

On the side I had apple slices with a mini-tub of Tribe hummus…I may have dipped the sammie in the hummus, too (TWO kinds of hummus on ONE sandwich – now that’s my kind of meal)!

IMG_2885

You know what this means…fresh lemonade!!

Lunch dessert = dried fruit platter with raw cow hide mango, pineapple, and papaya spears.

IMG_2886

The skies parted, so I sprinted to the gym…my workout was good, not great.  It felt good to get my blood pumping, but the whole time I was wishing I was outside :(  On the plus side, I had the new Black Eyed Peas cd AND Jillian’s podcast (thanks Sarah!!) to distract me.

I did some very necessary shopping on my way home…

IMG_2321IMG_2322

I was hardly in the door when I ripped into these babies!  I had a obscenely embarrassing amount (TEN).  Cinnamon may even be better than the original!  The HUGE sugar crystals on top were the best part.  SoSoSoGood!

Even after half the box, I wasn’t full, so I crunched into this bright red loverrr.

IMG_2758 IMG_2808

And sipped on pounded a Cosmic Cranberry Kombucha (try saying THAT 5 times fast).

In case you were worried, I replenished my Sabra stash today.

I have GOT to get a hold on myself..I bought 4 different flavors (3 of which were Sabra).  Can’t wait to see Kyle’s reaction when he opens the fridge…

IMG_2669

For dinner I dove right into the classic Sabra (FIRST with a fork, and then with an english muffin).

IMG_2709

Since yesterday’s “nachos” were such a success…I went with round two of the veggie slices “cheesy” chips – which I then decided could ALSO be dipped in hummus.  I mean c’mon, why not?!

Who didn’t see this coming…haha.

Once my carb cravings were properly met (and surpassed), I decided to get some other food groups in (wait, hummus isn’t it’s own food group?) and made a plate filled with yum.

IMG_2678

Mark your calendars kids, because this will go down in history as one of THE SINGLE best dinners of my life.

Lookie lookie: Chickpeas, edamame, brown rice, tofu chunks, shredded carrots, broccoli slaw, red bell pepps, and dried cranberries all a bed of spinach.

Oh.Em.Gee.

IMG_2680

Beeeee-YOOT!

I was quite content after this bomb dindin.  I had some iced tea which required NO ice since this mug was stored in the freezer (the water freezes in the outside part) – so COOL!

IMG_2851

Like a built in cozie!

Eventually it was time for the big D.

IMG_2686

Melted carob chips + PB + toasted Alvarado Street bread = mmmm!

This rocked me right into a food coma.  I was barely able to pack my lunch for work tomorrow before the zzzzzzs kicked in.

  1. First off, I am so excited Kyle and I are basically buds now! Two hippies in my friends circle and I couldn't be more excited!!

Yo I have been going through my Sabra like a crazy woman lately. I've been doing two a days with it and Cynthia was ever so kind to get me another tub today...so pUMPED!

Salad looking BOSSY! Almost as bossy as your HAWAIIAN TRIP SOON! Is it weird that I already know you are going to eat a lot of amazing fresh fruit? I think not.

  3. Um your eats look absolutely fantastic girly! And this might sound weird, but I like to eat my sandwiches open-faced so that way I feel like I have "double" the food haha so it lasts longer! ANd I need to find some Newman's Own products..ahhh they look so good!

  4. I just got back from Hawaii! What island are you going to? Is this your first time? I totally packed a week early too, gotta be prepared!!

I always cut in half (diagonally or vertically depending on my mood) but I have to eat the right side first, otherwise I'd feel off balance, lol.

I LOOOOOOVE RRP Sabra!!! TO DIE.

  5. LOL, I do the EXACT same thing with my sams so I don't get sad toward the end. LOL!

  6. Hi there! I just found your adorable blog through Maggie's and just wanted to say, I looove your motto! I've got myself a humungo appetite but I like to stay on the healthier side of things. hahahah :)

I love that dessert creation. Absolutely gorgeous! And very much like you, I recently discovered Sabra's creaminess but don't have a favorite flavor...perhaps garlic! :P I'm a garlicy kinda girl!

Hope you have a fabulous hump day!

  7. So much hummus goodness - yum! I'm slowly realizing hummus is amazing on pretty much everything. Agreed about tofu too! Where in Hawaii are you headed?

  8. I always cut my sandwiches in half (diagonally) mostly for blog-readers' benefit--they gotta see the tasty innards, right?

    Ditto on soy in moderation!

  9. Glad you liked Jilly Jill. Today she said that we are all going to get ugly and die. She said, "Even Angelina Jolie...that bitch is going to get real ugly and die." I wanted to kiss her! (Jillian, not Angelina...okay, maybe both).

  10. Preparing meals for Kyle..that is so cute! I did the same thing when I left Matt for three weeks. I had nightmares of him eating beef stew out of the can and had to scramble to make some real food to put in the freezer!
What island are you going to? I forget if I have asked you already! Hope you can blog from there so we can all pretend like we're there, too!

  11. You're going to Hawaii?... JEALOUS. ;)

I do cut sandwiches in half diagonally, but both halves end up pretty much the same size! I'm very weird about "good" crusts, so I usually leave that half for the end, if there is one!

  12. I just discovered your blog, and you eat so many yummy things!! I am also completely obsessed with hummus, and sabra is my favorite brand...the garlic flavor is amazingggg...i just wish it wasn't so pricy. i make my own most of the time but it just doesn't come out the same! have fun in hawaii!!

  13. I'm so randy with my sandwiches, I cut mine slighty off center so that I have one small side and one bigger side. THAT WAY, after I'm done with the small side, I have a BIGGER sandwich to finish eating ;) Love the 'fu!

Cinnamon is by far the best flavor of Hermit! The granules just put it over the top! That salad and dessert just did me in - I adore you and your hummus obsesh! Does Kyle eat hummus too? My roommate (okay, mom ;) ) eats hummus and sometimes our stash gets DANGEROUSLY low.

  14. Sorry about the loud thunderstorm!!

I cut in half and definitely eat the smaller half first :) But I don't just bite into it; I tear off little pieces at a time! LOL

  15. Wow your food porn always looks AMAZING! K, two questions for ya! 1) What are the nutritional stats on the Alvarado Street bread and where do you get it? You seem to love this bread and i totally want to try it! 2) where do you get the mini Tribe hummus? so adorable!
To answer your sandwich question -- i cut into fours! I think you can determine a person's level of crazy based on how she cuts her sandwiches and eats her food, dontcha think?! LOL Have a great one!

  16. I cut my sandwiches diagonally, and eat the side with the bottom crust first (if that makes sense). haha I like to tear the top crust off and eat it separately/dip it in hummus at the end. Wow sandwich eating is a science in this household.

  17. suuure everything in moderation except PB, hummus, fig newmans, frozen yogurt...:D

  18. ooooh the new BEP cd! Is it goood? I need to listen to it pronto.

that salad looks almost too good to be true.

btws I cut my sammies ONLY when I don't feel like there's too much in there to where things will spill out. Spillage does not make Julie a happy camper but good packed sammies do :)

  19. Nothing screams summer to me more than NY thunderstorms! Though I secretely love the post-thunder lack of humidity (less frizzy hair!)

I thought I was the only person who cut their sandwiches that way- I do it diagonally and eat the smaller half for the same reason.

Salad looks AMAAAAAAZING. Just so you know in advance, in October, you may well find a shortage of hummus on the UWS ;)

I am curious BTW- one of my relatives is a cardiologist at Beth Israel in Union Sq...is that where you work? would be weird if you guys knew each other!

  20. haha LOVE all the hummus!! And I ALWAYS cut my sandwiches in half. Sometimes even in quarters but halves are a must!!

  21. Amen to that sista!! To EVERYTHANGGG in this post!! I am such a soy lover, I just hate this bad rap it's getting.....sorry, I like soy milk...then I want tofurky with lunch, then I may want tofu with dinner!!! Ayeeee, and i've noticed that SOY is in every chip known to man! Whatevs.

I totally agree on the CHOBS flavors, strawberry is actually my favorite, then blueberry...and then peach!

I'm sorry about the scary thunderstorms!! But i'm sure it was kind of exciting??! I always cut my sandwiches in half, usually down the middle....and I save the better lookin' slice for last-like you!

  22. I LOVE tofu sandwiches. I know this is weird, but whether or not I cut them sort of depends on the kind of sandwich I'm eating... PB&J usually gets chomped into whole, while a veggie sandwich gets cut.

The hermits look so good. Everyone loves them, I know... they'll be bought as soon as I'm home, and have more than $1 in my wallet.

Hope you got a good night's sleep!

  23. Hummus is totally a food group, and your dinner looked like it came straight from the Whole Foods Hot Bar. Impressive!

I'm a diagonal sandwich girl myself, and I must buy Hermits. Soon, very soon. :)

  25. I LOVE that you guys are all just as weird about cutting your sandwiches! Either we are all freaks, or there's hope for us yet...

About my upcoming vacay: I'm heading to Maui for 2 weeks - leaving on Sunday. I've been there before but I still CAN'T WAIT!!

Annabel - I buy my Alvarado Street bread at a local health foods store, but they have them at Whole Foods. Check the freezer section because they store live sprouted bread in the frozen foods section. You're right, it's my favorite bread, especially the whole wheat and california style. It's basically similar to Ezekiel, but I think it's not as cardboard like. Here's the website for the nutritionals.

Julie - the new BEP cd is the PERF workout playlist. Love it!!
Heather - you have officially sent my ego through the roof. creating whole foods meals on my own is my goal in LIFE. looks like i can die happy now :)
Abby - THANK YOU!!! OBVIOUSLY I'm going to have to try this.
