April (in Cliff’s Notes)

I don’t even know where to begin…this past week has been one of the most incredible times of my life.  Between getting engaged, visiting friends and family in Nor Cal and So Cal, my cousin getting married and my other cousin giving birth, it has been a fantastically memorable week.

Yes.  My only two cousins managed to coordinate the biggest events in their lives to overlap!!!!!!!!!

My older cousin went into labor 5 weeks early, and ended up in the hospital on the night of the rehearsal dinner and gave birth to a healthy baby boy the day of my cousin’s wedding (her younger sister).  Not only did she miss the ceremony and the reception, but she was the maid of honor and her husband was one of the groomsmen.  Needless to say, it was ONE EXCITING DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I rarely remembered to snap pics of my food because I was a bit preoccupied (it was one of the LAST things on my mind…) and to be honest, a lot of it wasn’t very photogenic.  An unfortunate reality of traveling and going out to eat with friends/family is the inability to control the types of food that are available for vegans.

In Nor Cal I ended up eating a lot of cereal messes…

(grape nuts, bran flakes, nanners and fresh blackberries!!!)

IMG_1668

SO MUCH wonderful fruit (!!) and yes, that bowl has my name on it…only in Paris can you find “Elise” on a dish.

IMG_1670

Normally I don’t like citrus, but these oranges were SO juicy and perfect (AND they were from our backyard)

IMG_1718

Who am I?  Gliding Calm?

No worries, we have massive trees with about 800 pounds of oranges, so I was going to town guilt free :)

IMG_1719

They look fake, they are so pretty.  Mmmmm…

We also had a BBQ the day after the engagement.  Sorta an impromptu celebration (which is pretty easy when the weather is permanently 80 degrees).

Apps: Sabra hummus with veggies and ALL-BRAN crackers (review to follow)

IMG_1709

Snackety snacking…

The All-Bran crackers were SO good.  They kinda reminded me of graham crackers because they had a sweet honey taste to them, even though I got the “multi-grain” flavor.  Plus, who doesn’t like fiber?  Can’t beat those stats…I’ll prolly never find them again back in NYC.

My dad threw some meat on the grill while I prepped veggie skewers.

IMG_1710

Red and yellow bell peppers, zucchs, squash, and ‘shrooms.

IMG_1714

And after some time on the barby…

IMG_1716

There is nothing like grilling fresh produce to make me miss California.  This west coast livin’ just can’t be beat…

IMG_1715 IMG_1717

Other featured eats: salad, rice, VINO, and champagne (in bulk)

IMG_1673

Plus, some tea on the late night to soothe my tummy.

IMG_1721

…and FAR too much of this.  My dad is going to be pissed when he sees the cherry picking that went on while I noshed this tub down to nothingness.  I heart dried fruit like nobody’s business.

In So Cal I ended up frequenting the Whole Foods hot bar quite a bit (always a great option).  Hummus and falafel are definitely the flavor of the month so far.  Prepare yourself for a MAJOR falafel montage…

IMG_1725

(and remember these are all different trips – and I only captured 1/3 of my meals on film)

IMG_1738

The above meal had TWO kinds of hummus (parsley and plain) and in the corner is BBQ tofu.

The below meal was dominated by hummus.  I went overboard, to put it mildly.

IMG_1740

I even tracked down a falafel, hummus, and pita chip platter at the AIRPORT, on one of our many flights, there’s no stopping me!!!

IMG_1747

I told you I went through a MAJOR falafel phase.

We also spent some time at my g-ma’s in Newport Beach, so obviously I managed to get my hands on hummus :)

IMG_1741

This was my first time trying this brand, and I gotta say, it gave Sabra a run for it’s money.  I would DEF buy it again.  Creamy and thick, and packed with flavor.

But enough about food…back to the fun times!

The proposal was such a surprise.  :)

Kyle told me his parents were in San Francisco for business, so we decided to meet them in the city for lunch…I found out later no such business trip existed.

We stopped by my sister’s apartment on the way…

Here’s the view from her rooftop.

Then Kyle took me to Crissy field to “meet up with his parents.”

IMG_1561

In actuality, he asked me to marry him!!!!!!

As if the day could get ANY more amazing, his parents AND mine then showed up (they knew the plan the entire time!!!!!!) and we all celebrated together!

IMG_1543

As you can see, the weather was perfect, the scenery was gorgeous, and I was the happiest girl in the world!!!!!!!

IMG_1509

I was basically doing the above all day long (staring at my finger  and gushing on the phone).

IMG_1545

How could I not, right?

For lunch, we went to a vegetarian restaurant called Greens, which was great!  I got a skewer with veggies and tofu and a side salad.  But I was hardly even aware of my food on SUCH a high :)

IMG_1526

The champagne was flowing…

IMG_1527

After lunch we took more photos, walked around the city, and eventually made our way to the financial district (near our old SF apartment before we moved to NYC).  Kyle had booked a hotel room for the night, so we check in and then headed out to do some shopping.  I desperately needed a nicer outfit than what I brought (jeans and a t-shirt) for dinner.  Clearly the ring upped the ante for the attire!  Off to BCBG, Aldo, and Victoria’s Secret…stat!

IMG_1240

For dinner we went to Kokkari, an amazing Greek restaurant in the financial district.

The food was great and they were so thoughtful, catering the menu to make sure there were vegan options for me.  I hardly even remember what we had because there was so much good food…fried eggplant and zucchini cakes, mushrooms, babaganoush, hummus, greek yogurt, etc…just to name a few things.

L to R: my parents, Kyle, me, Kyle’s parents.

Our table faced a massive fireplace, with live rotisserie action going on.

Baklava dessert with a sweet message.

It was amazing, for lack of a better word.  The entire day couldn’t have been more perfect.

holy BIPOLAR batman!

Some days I just don't like my job. More on that later though.

To start, I made my lunch last night. The normal sando :)

Plus, apple slices and a combo of raisins and yogurt covered raisins.

I left for work early, headed to starbucks for my AM soy latte and before I could blink it was noon and I was barely under way with my work load. Seriously, I can't put into words how insane all my patients were today. Thank goodness I got a venti this morning because I didn't get to step out for a lunch break until 3:30 (and I didn't even realize how late it was either, that's how busy I was with these crazy ass patients).

Soooo, by the time I got to east my food I was running on empty...I needed soy latte recharging in a major way. Naturally, I enjoyed my lunch with another venti soy latte, and then refilled the cup with plain soy milk from the bar (yes, I'm crafty like that).

I easily downed the second venti soy milk along with the raisins that I packed.

The remainder of work went similarly horrible...let's just say, I discharged my bipolar patient before I left for lunch and when my shift was over I was still dealing with him (oh, and did I mention the hospital security had to get involved). Awesome!

Clearly I was in NO mood to work out after the day I had. I left the hospital super late, I was exhausted, and all I wanted was to curl up with a soylicious treat. So I did.

2 vanilla silk soy milk bottles and a venti iced coffee...which I enjoyed as 3 servings

Here is the first one in a beer stein (check out how much of the venti iced coffee is still left)! After this I was ready to go to bed, but Kyle forced me to eat more...and I caved.

I had the rest of the raisin bran, which was 3 huge bowls with (you guessed it) MORE soy milk.

Then I had even more yogurt covered raisins. WAY too much food.

No gym + food coma = :(

Some days I just can't get moderation under control...I am a very all or none girl. One minute I am content with coffee, the next I'm downing my 4th dinner. Geez, talk about a bipolar day.

Ugh, some days I just DON'T like my job.

Sabado Sin Lactosa

Here is my lunch that I packed the night before. Same old sando, gummy snacks that I doubt I will eat (they don't really look that good?) and an apple and raisins.

On the way to work (did I mention it's Saturday) I picked up a treat to get the day started off right (you guessed it, a steamy starbucks soy latte). Because I was so productive and efficient in the AM, I was able to jump outside for a quick break (yes, it was to grab another soy latte - guilty). I have a PROBLEM!!!!

Lunch came a bit late since I had to discharge 2 patients before I could get away for my break. I hit up the 'bucks for ANOTHER soy latte as I enjoyed my sando and a crossword. It was quite a relaxing lunch as a matter of fact...I think that's why I don't mind working weekends. In fact, I am starting to actually prefer them, it's so nice to do rounds early because then the rest of the day is kinda mellow...(since very few procedures take place on weekends).

Not pictured: My afternoon snack of a berry smoothie flavored power bar (yum! favorite flavor)

After work I hit up NYSC, I think this may have really settled the Equinox vs. NYSC matter once and for all. For the 2nd day in a row now, I have chosen to go to NYSC over Equinox (since I have the option to attend either this week only). I finally remembered to ask when my present membership expires and it isn't until October 29th (I didn't remember it being so long after I moved to nyc - I really mooched off of Kyle's membership for a while)!

So on the way home I picked up some goodies for dinner...

silk soy milk = LIQUID LOVE

I was pretty lazy by the time I got out of the shower and preparing food just was not about to happen...so naturally I went with my "go to" dinner (cereal!!). Maybe it's not wheaties...but it's still the dinner of champions.
I had 3 (massive) bowls, and when I say massive, I mean it. I opened the box and judging by the weight of it after I was done, there was some SERIOUS damage done (well over half the box, no question). Oh, and I had the vanilla silk soy milk with it as well as the rest of the other soy milk carton. Full, check please.
Sweet dreams!
